I love the beginning of the year! According to my friend Randy Gravitt, I am not alone – many people love beginnings… the first day of baseball season, the beginning of a school year, the start of a marathon – you can feel the electricity in the air, and yes, the beginning of a new year.
Why do I love the New Year? There are at least five reasons:
1. The Past is Past – The rear view mirror is always a fraction the size of the windshield for a reason. We all need to learn from the past, but we shouldn’t live there. If you haven’t already, take a few minutes to record your key learnings from 2014. You may be surprised at the number of things you want to repeat and the activities you want to change in the New Year. For leaders, the future is our frontier. Don’t be paralyzed by your past, be the architect of your future.
2. Our Actions Will Matter – As leaders, our actions always matter. Where we invest our time and energy drives results. The behaviors we model affect our team in a profound way… People always watch the leader. What is your team learning from watching you? If you and I don’t show up strong in 2015, vision will not be cast, people won’t be developed, problems will remain unsolved and results will not be achieved. A new year is a chance to show up and make a difference!
3. Opportunities for Growth – Our capacity to grow determines our capacity to lead. The New Year always holds countless opportunities for growth. In 2015, I’m attending two new conferences (e.g. and i4CP), leading a new team, meeting with my leadership development group for the 17th consecutive year and learning to be a grandfather (see above!) I will learn and grow in 2015!
4. New Challenges – The challenges you and I will face in this new year could fill volumes. The good news – leaders love challenges. Without them, there’s no need for leadership. One of mine for 2015: How to help my new team serve as a catalyst for life-long leadership growth across our entire organization. That will present countless challenges. I’m pumped – 2015 will be another year of challenges!
5. Opportunities for Impact – As a leader, what you do matters. If you don’t believe that, you should pass the leadership baton to someone who does. Think for a moment about the impact you can have on your team, your organization, your family, your community, and the causes where you volunteer your services. You can make the greatest impact of your life, thus far, in 2015. Plan for it and do it.
I believe we are called to lead with all diligence. I’m thankful 2015 gives me another chance to try and do just that.[GLS_Shield]
