Only 60 days until Christmas – only 67 days until the New Year. Are you ready? If you’re like me, you aren’t ready for either, but we can be! Ready or not, we all have a fresh start waiting for us as we begin 2016. What are you doing NOW to ensure next year will be the best year of your life as a leader?
The truth is, we don’t get to decide if next year will be great or not; we do get to decide if we will be great. I want to do all I can to be proactive and prepared as we begin 2016.
The best advice I can give you about 2016 is to start now. If you begin thinking about the New Year on January 1st, you will already be behind. I’ve been down that road before; it is a long and winding detour to nowhere. All that happens is you find yourself in March or April “wishing” you had gotten off to a better start.
Tonight, I will meet with a group of guys I’ve been meeting with for 17 years. We study leadership and we do life together. The group is built on the principle:
Your capacity to grow determines your capacity to lead.
Our agenda tonight will be focused on how we can grow to become better leaders over the next 12 months. We’ll cover a lot of ground in the meeting – enough to warrant two posts. Today, I’ll share the questions we’ll use to launch our conversation, and in my next post, I’ll share some additional tips for an amazing 2016.
To grow as a leader in 2016…
Ask the right questions. The pre-work for tonight’s meeting included the following discussion starters:
- What went well for you in 2015 re: personal development?
- What activity(s) contributed most to your growth in 2015?
- What did not go well in 2015 re: your personal development?
- What modifications to your development process are you considering for 2016?
- What are your initial thoughts re: focus for 2016?
- Have you blocked time on your calendar to create your 2016 Plan?
Tonight we will Assess what worked and what didn’t in 2015, Affirm what we want to repeat, and begin the process of making Adjustments for 2016.
Wednesday, I’ll share some additional thoughts on how to make 2016 your best year ever.[GLS_Shield]
Why not take 10 minutes and answer the above questions yourself?
