In his book Tribes, Seth Godin writes:  The first thing a leader can focus on is the act of tightening the tribe.  It’s tempting to make the tribe bigger, to get more members, to spread the word.  This pales, however, when juxtaposed with the effects of a tighter tribe.  A tribe that communicates more quickly, with alacrity and emotion, is a tribe that thrives.

Godin’s principle of “Tighter” reminds me of language that another leader once used.  His advice was, “Quit focusing on growing a big organization.  Instead, attempt to build big people.  The result?  Big people will lead to a bigger organization.”

The point of both leaders is that in order to expand your influence, you must narrow your focus.

To narrow your focus:   Do fewer things better.  Choose one priority and attack it with excellence.  Identify a single message.  Pursue clarity and unity.
