40

Last Saturday my sister turned 40.  Let’s just say, the storm has been brewing for a while.  In fact, a few months back she called me up and quipped, “I am about to be old like you.”

I didn’t laugh.

What came next did make me smile, however.  She asked me if I would run a marathon with her.

Sounded like a good idea at the time, so we signed up, and my daughter even decided to join us as a surprise for my sis.

I’m proud to say that we all finished and brought home some bling.

The entire experience taught me 10 things about life and leadership.

1 – What sounds like a good idea today might not seem like one tomorrow.

2 – Miles go by faster when you are with the right person.

3 – 26.2 miles is still a long way no matter who you are with.

4 – Having an encourager for support is vital.  (Notice my brother-in-law in the picture.  He is the one who doesn’t look smelly.  The one smart enough to say no on the first day the “storm” started brewing.  He met us throughout the race with high fives and plenty of supplies to make our day easier)

5 – Crossing the finish line never gets old.  (This was marathon #5 for me)

6 – Helping someone else achieve a goal is more rewarding than achieving one yourself.  (This was my sisters first marathon)

7 – Young women are faster than old men.  (My daughter beat me by 45 minutes and finished second in her age group.  Her first marathon too)

8 – Daughters brag a lot.

9 – The pain of discipline is less than the pain of regret.  (Better to be ‘crazy person’ than a couch potato)

10 – I have the best sister on the planet!  (For those of you who don’t know her, no words can describe her.  For those of you who do know her, no words are necessary)

I love you girl.  Happy birthday!!!

i2i,

Randy

This reminds me of a book: Life – A Challenging Race of Endurance. Author David Roberts uses metaphors, hyperboles, and real life examples to make his point.
Teamwork and support to accomplish goals of an organization are essential.

I have not read that one. But it sounds like a winner! Thanks RP.
