Are You Remembering What You Want?

I have a friend who is always reminding me that, “Discipline is remembering what you want.”

Often times I forget what I want, and discipline leaks in my life. I’m guessing the same might be true for you?
Has it been a while since you reviewed your goals and thought through what you really want? If so, I challenge you to set aside some time in the coming days and evaluate your life and leadership from a discipline standpoint. With only two months to go in 2015, now is a great time to take inventory.
I hope the following suggestions will be helpful:
1. Write down what you want. Every week, spend an hour reviewing what you write down and identify the objectives that will get you to where you want to go. Careful planning is the first step to ending up in a great place.
2. Do what you wrote down. That is the discipline part. Things will seem hard at times, but just do what you are supposed to do. And every time you want to quit, remember you are moving toward what you want.
3. Evaluate your progress. Just as a pilot constantly adjusts a plane to keep it on course with the set coordinates of a flight, a leader must also make adjustments along the way. If you find yourself failing to make progress, or headed in the wrong direction, make the necessary changes and get back on course.
4. Identify some accountability. You will have a lot more success if you have to look someone in the eye from time to time and give an account of how you are doing.

Good reminder, Randy. I am amazed at how easy it is to lose the kind of discipline that is actually needed in so many areas of life… even when doing well in a few areas!
