I can’t resist the fact that on the week of 8.9.10 we also have a Friday the 13th.
Friday the 13th is supposedly a day of bad luck. A day for fear. For the record . . . I am not a believer in the superstition. Why single out one day? For leaders fear is a temptation everyday.
13 common things leaders fear:
- Failure
- Lack of resources
- Negative people
- Lack of momentum
- Bad economy
- Success
- Office politics
- Gossip
- Growth
- Lack of Growth
- Lack of Support
- Criticism
- No one will like my blog!
Just as you can’t change the calendar, if you read back through the list you will see that most of the things leaders fear are beyond their control as well.
Stop leading out of fear, and focus on your mission and your strengths. As FDR once quipped, “There is nothing to fear, but fear itself.”
At least not until May 2011. That is the next time Friday the 13th will roll around.
