Years ago, my wife and I built a house. One of the decisions we made was to raise the ceiling a foot in one section of our home. Looking back, it is one of the best decisions we made.
For leaders, many times we pay more attention to the floors than we do the ceilings. I am tempted to shoot for the minimum instead of trying to exceed my potential.
I recognize there is no such thing as exceeding one’s potential, but thinking that way is a guaranteed way to come up short.
What if you started looking for ways to redefine your ceiling? Ways that are out of the box.
This week you will want to try to be a little better than last week’s floor. I say resist the urge to top yesterday’s mediocrity. Instead, do something incredible this week. Try something hard. Break a record. Smash a goal. Chase a dream. Inspire a teammate.
In other words … Raise the Ceiling, Not the Floor.

What is one way leaders can raise the ceiling in their leadership environment?
My coach in high school was a great inspirational leader, he impacted everyone of us and we benefited by his inspiration. He famous line that I will always remember is this: “Shoot for the stars, you may not reach them, but you will land a lot higher than where you began!” Coach Powell was the winningest coach in Florida during his era.
That is a great example, Coach. Thanks, as always, and I hope you have a great week!
