Team over Talent

Legendary Notre Dame football coach, Knute Rockne once said, “The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team.  As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven.”

Over time, team will defeat talent.  This principle is true, not only on the field, but in every other area of leadership as well.

As a leader, one of your tasks is to acquire talent.  But just as important is your ability to align your talented people around a common mission.  To build a team.

If you must choose one over the other, choose team over talent every time.

Rarely do preseason favorites win titles.  Teams win titles.

If you want to make progress in your organization, you might want to spend more of your time building your team than you do building your talent pool.

Randy,
For some reason, your email invites to the blog are relegated to my spam inbox. This morning, I was cleaning out the spam and noticed the blog is back. That’s the bad news … good news is I was treated to a weeks worth of great thoughts in one sitting.
Thanks Randy for sharing your insights.

Great lesson. Has Alabama or Notre Dame won the most national championships?
