After 18 years and 4 months of life together, it all changed yesterday when we dropped our oldest off at college and said goodbye.
Let me go on record. There is nothing good about goodbye.
I will admit that it is time and that she’s ready. I will also tell you that she is going to the right place and that we have done all we can do up to this point.
However, I won’t tell you that this is easy. There are too many prayers, bed time stories, tea parties, father daughter runs, family dinners, conversations, vacations, and hugs that have been experienced for this to be easy.
What does all of this have to do with leadership? A lot if you ask me.
To have integrity as a leader, you have to get it right at home. Too often I see leaders who wreck their influence because they fail to focus on their family life.
You are the only one who can fill your role in your family. You can’t delegate it and you can’t expect your husband or wife to do it for you.
Make the most of your opportunity. Time is short and it goes faster than you think.
When the day comes to let go, you don’t want it to be a good day. Pain is the price you pay for love if you have done the right thing.
I wouldn’t have it any other way.
