In his book “Linchpin,” Seth Godin writes, “you have brilliance in you, your contribution is valuable, and the art you create is precious.”
The fact is, I don’t always feel that way. Truth be told, there are many days that it feels more like I am going through the motions than it does contributing something valuable or creating art.
There are many reasons for this feeling. Some external and some internal. The external reasons are easy to blame. A lack of appreciation from those around you, low resources, poor pay, weak teammates, or finding yourself in the wrong job . . . just to name a few.
But perhaps the internal issues are more at fault. Apathy, boredom, laziness, selfishness, distraction, and a lack of passion are killers when it comes to maximizing influence in the workplace.
Godin challenges us to stop trying to find a job that matches our passion and rather bring passion to our jobs. He writes, “Transferring your passion to your job is far easier than finding a job that happens to match your passion.”
Are you fully engaged at work these days? Or are you just going through the motions? Your contribution depends on your answer to these questions.
Make the right choice and bring your passion to your position. Someone’s life will be changed, and it might just be yours!
